Acute atrial fibrillation during dengue hemorrhagic fever BJID
Veloso,Henrique Horta; Ferreira Júnior,João Anísio; Paiva,Joyce Morgana Braga de; Honório,Júlio Faria; Bellei,Nancy C. Junqueira; Paola,Angelo Amato Vincenzo de.
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Cardiac rhythm disorders, such as atrioventricular blocks and ventricular ectopic beats, appear during infection and are attributed to viral myocarditis. However, supraventricular arrhythmias have not been reported. We present a case of acute atrial fibrillation, with a rapid ventricular rate, successfully treated with intravenous amiodarone, in a 62-year-old man with dengue hemorrhagic fever, who had no structural heart disease.

Altered Levels of Nodal Excitability by Rate-Dependent Inhibitory Effects of Essential Oil of Citrus aurantium on the Electrophysiological Properties of Isolated Perfused Rabbit AV-Node: Protective Role in the Prevention of Ouabain Toxicity International Journal of Morphology
Khori,Vahid; Nayebpour,Mohsen; Mansourian,Azad Reza; Davarian,Ali; Naseri,Mohsen; Salehi,Aref; Alizadeh,Ali-Mohamad.
Treatment of supraventricular arrhythmia includes a wide range of medical interventions. Herbal remedies are suitable alternatives to synthetic drugs due to their availability, minimal side effects and lower price. Pharmacological studies and traditional medical literature point to the cardiovascular effects of Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae) in many instances. In the present study we used isolated perfused AV-node of rabbit as an experimental model to determine the effect of various concentrations of essential oil of C. aurantium (0.1-0.3 v/v) on the nodal conduction time and refractoriness of an isolated rabbit AV-nodal preparations. Selective stimulation protocols were used to independently quantify AV nodal recovery, facilitation and fatigue in 18...

An analysis of the electrocardiogram QT interval BJMBR
Koehler,N.R.; Zouvi,J.P.; Acevedo,L.A.; Sukienik,B.J.; Rabin,M..
No reports testing the efficacy of the use of the QT/RR ratio <1/2 for detecting a normal QTc interval were found in the literature. The objective of the present study was to determine if a QT/RR ratio <=1/2 can be considered to be equal to the normal QTc and to compare the QT and QTc measured and calculated clinically and by a computerized electrocardiograph. Ratios (140 QT/RR) of 28 successive electrocardiograms obtained from 28 consecutive patients in a tertiary level teaching hospital were analyzed clinically by 5 independent observers and by a computerized electrocardiograph. The QT/RR ratio provided 56% sensitivity and 78% specificity, with an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve of 75.8% (95%CI: 0.68 to 0.84). The divergence...

Takada,J.Y.; Solimene,M.C.; da Luz,P.L.; Grupi,C.J.; Giorgi,D.M.A.; Rigonatti,S.P.; Rumi,D.O.; Gowdak,L.H.W.; Ramires,J.A.F..
To evaluate the impact of electroconvulsive therapy on arterial blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, and the occurrence of ischemia or arrhythmias, 38 (18 men) depressive patients free from systemic diseases, 50 to 83 years old (mean: 64.7 ± 8.6) underwent electroconvulsive therapy. All patients were studied with simultaneous 24-h ambulatory blood pressure and Holter monitoring, starting 18 h before and continuing for 3 h after electroconvulsive therapy. Blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, arrhythmias, and ischemic episodes were recorded. Before each session of electroconvulsive therapy, blood pressure and heart rate were in the normal range; supraventricular ectopic beats occurred in all patients and ventricular ectopic...

Corrêa,F.G.; Pontes,C.L.S.; Verzola,R.M.M.; Mateos,J.C.P.; Velho,P.E.N.F.; Schijman,A.G.; Selistre-de-Araujo,H.S..
Infection with Bartonella spp may cause cardiac arrhythmias, myocarditis and endocarditis in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a possible association between Bartonella spp bacteremia and endocarditis, arrhythmia and Chagas cardiomyopathy in patients from Brazil and Argentina. We screened for the presence of bacterial 16S rRNA in human blood by PCR using oligonucleotides to amplify a 185-bp bacterial DNA fragment. Blood samples were taken from four groups of subjects in Brazil and Argentina: i) control patients without clinical disease, ii) patients with negative blood-culture endocarditis, iii) patients with arrhythmias, and iv) patients with chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. PCR products were analyzed on 1.5% agarose gel to visualize the...

Dogs poisoned with Nerium oleander fresh leaves: clinical and electrocardiographic findings Ciência Rural
Camplesi,Annelise Carla; Bellodi,Carolina; Socha,José Javier Mesa; Hatayde,Mário Roberto; Sobreira,Márcia Ferreira da Rosa; Araujo,Gustavo Henrique Marques; Araujo,Carla Fredrichsen Moya.
ABSTRACT: Nerium oleander is distributed worldwide, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. These shrubs are frequently used as ornamental plants. However, they contain more than 30 cardiac glycosides that can cause serious toxic effects in dogs. The objective of this study was to report the clinical and electrocardiographic alterations in dogs experimentally poisoned with N. oleander. Ten adult, healthy, mixed-breed dogs weighing 10-25kg and aged 3-6 years were selected for the study. We orally administered 0.25g kg-1 of fresh ground leaves of N. oleander to the dogs. No dog died after the ingestion, but all exhibited signs of poisoning such as vomiting, sialorrhea, nausea, apathy, conjunctiva congestion, dehydration, abdominal pain, tremors,...

Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors in the heart Biol. Res.
MACKENZIE,LAUREN; RODERICK,H. LLEWELYN; PROVEN,ANDREW; CONWAY,STUART J; BOOTMAN,MARTIN D.
Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) is an established calcium-mobilizing messenger, which is well-known to activate Ca2+ signaling in many cell types. Contractile cardiomyocytes express hormone receptors that are coupled to the production of InsP3. Such cardioactive hormones, including endothelin, may have profound inotropic and arrhythmogenic actions, but it is unclear whether InsP3 underlies any of these effects. We have examined the expression and localization of InsP3 receptors (InsP3Rs), and the potential role of InsP3 in modulating cardiac excitation-contraction coupling (EC coupling). Stimulation of electrically-paced atrial and ventricular myocytes with a membrane-permeant InsP3 ester was found to evoke an increase in the amplitudes of action...

Modulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium release by calsequestrin in cardiac myocytes Biol. Res.
GYÖRKE,SANDOR; GYÖRKE,INNA; TERENTYEV,DMITRY; VIATCHENKO-KARPINSKI,SERGE; WILLIAMS,SIMON C.
Calsequestrin (CASQ2) is a high capacity Ca-binding protein expressed inside the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Mutations in the cardiac calsequestrin gene (CASQ2) have been linked to arrhythmias and sudden death induced by exercise and emotional stress. We have studied the function of CASQ2 and the consequences of arrhythmogenic CASQ2 mutations on intracellular Ca signalling using a combination of approaches of reverse genetics and cellular physiology in adult cardiac myocytes. We have found that CASQ2 is an essential determinant of the ability of the SR to store and release Ca2+ in cardiac muscle. CASQ2 serves as a reservoir for Ca2+ that is readily accessible for Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR) and also as an active Ca2+ buffer that modulates the local...
